Born in California in 1962, Owens studied at Parsons in New York for two years before dropping his studies there in favour of a pattern-making course, which led him to work as a cutter for a local company making inexpensive copies of successful designer items.
Owens started making garments under his own name in 1994 in Los Angeles,
His 2002 collection was presented at New York’s Fashion Week, and Owens received the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Emerging Talent Award in 2002, the same year in which he moved to Paris.
His designs reflect the broken-down glamour and carefree luxury that is Hollywood His signature asymmetrical dresses and fitted jackets have been worn for years by fans such as Courtney Love and Madonna
In 2005, Owens launched a furniture line, and the diffusion line Rick Owens Lilies.
Now, in addition to producing his own line, he is also creative director at the Parisian fur house Revillon.
Owens recently signed a deal with the the Bologna-based sales agent Eo Bocci Associates, and is about to broaden not only his line of shoes, clothing and bags but also its range of distribution.
His long-time lover and muse is Michelle Lamy, owner of Hollywood's well-known café hotspot Les Deux Cafes.
