Born in Sunderland, England in 1981, Pugh began working as a costume designer for the national Youth Theatre at 14 years old. He completed his degree in Fashion Design at Central St Martins.
He received a work placement assisting Rick Owens at the Parisian fur house Revillon, and shortly afterwards Owens’ long-term partner, Parisian fashion consultant Michele Lamy, bacame Pugh’s official backer.
Pugh’s inspiration comes from ideas of shape, proportion and process. His trademark technique of using balloons to play with shape by accentuating models’ limbs was first seen in his final collection at St Martins. This collection caught the eye of the senior fashion editor at Dazed and Confused magazine, who featured one of his designs on the magazine’s front cover.
Until his Spring 2007 collection, his clothes were experimantal, only intended for the catwalk and impossible to purchase. He is now moving slowly towards producing more wearable designs. His clothing has been worn onstage by performers such as Kylie Minogue and Lady Gaga
In 2008, Pugh received the ANDAM prize, and began to show in Paris from the S/S 2009 season. His designs are available to purchase at a few stores worldwide: Side by Side in Japan, Seven and Opening Ceremony in New York, and in London at Browns and Dover Street Market.
He currently lives and works in Paris.
