Christian Dior is said to be the most recognized name in fashion, making his name with his rich and luxurious “New Look”

  • Summary

Early History

Born in Normandy, France in 1905, Christian Dior initially studied political science. By 1938, he had turned his focus to fashion design, however because of his tour of duty in World War 2, he was unable to work on his design business until much later, in 1946.

The “New Look”

Dior released his first collection in 1947 went down in history as the “New Look” after the editor of Harper’s Bazaar exclaimed, “"It's such a New Look!” The collection also caused controversy – his rich look was in sharp contract to austere wartime styles, featuring luxury rather than comfort, Dior used twenty yards of extravagant fabrics to create the designs. His goal was to bring some femininity back into women’s fashion, to world’s fashion capital. The signature shape was defined by mid-calf length fullskirts, large busts (which had been out of style since 1912) and a small waist - the ultimate “hourglass figure”.

The Dior Brand

In 1947, Dior revolutionised the perfume industry with the launch of the highly popular Miss Dior parfum, named after his sister, Catherine Dior.
Expansion of the brand had begun by the end of 1949, with the opening of a Christian Dior boutique in New York City, and by the end of that year 75% of Paris's fashion exports and 5% of France's total export revenue was coming from Dior fashions alone. The first Dior shoe line was launched in 1953 with the aid of Roger Vivier.

By the mid 1950’s, the House of Dior was a well-established and respected fashion empire, but as the success of the brand grew, so did the problem of counterfeiting due to the amount of women who could not afford to pay for the authentic label.
In 1957 the designer died suddenly from a heart attack, throwing the Dior business into chaos. General Manager Jacques Rouet considered shutting down operations entirely, but Yves Saint-Laurent, who had been hired as Dior’s assistant four years earlier, took on the role of head designer.
More recently, the brand has launched a menswear collection “Dior Homme”, attracting celebrity clientele such as Brad Pitt and Mick Jagger. A watch line has also been launched, and the perfume line expanded to included men’s fragrances.
The brand now operates stores in 210 locations worldwide.
