September is when those attending Fashion Week will showcase their fall purchases. Season essentials will carry you right through to spring, so invest wisely…
A coat is the perennial winter staple – spend as much as you can on this item, as it will remain a key investment throughout the season. It’s also the piece you’ll be seen in most between shows – and with street style photography becoming more popular each season, ensure you’re wearing the right coat in case you get photographed! For fall, opt for a tailored military design with brass buttons and epaulettes – this will feel smart and polish any look. If you’re tired of black, look to khaki, navy or gray instead. Or, if you’d rather add some patterned pieces to your winter wardrobe, invest in a printed dress coat and team it with a cashmere sweater and cropped pant.
Heels are a must during Fashion Week – you want to look and feel fabulous! Fall sees leopard print and brightly colored pumps on the top of everyone’s wish list. It’s really important to ensure your shoes are comfortable. I always carry flats in my bag for when I’m dashing from one show to another – look for metallic or embellished ballet shoes to add a touch of luxe to your look.
A big bag is vital for holding your iPad, camera and show tickets – plus all your other daily essentials. I prefer classic styles that I know I’ll use again and again. Beautiful leather in luxurious, understated styles won’t date.
Leather is still a big trend, and feels fresh for fall in berry and bottle green hues. Wear leather in silhouettes you are used to – you don’t have to choose biker styles, leather can be sophisticated. Pencil or full skirts and skinny pants paired with cashmere and elegant heels ensure you’ll look effortlessly chic. If you want to avoid black or make leather work as a neutral, look to navy and ox blood tones instead.
I’m really excited to see what the designers have in store for SS13. I’ll be paying close attention to Alexander Wang’s show in New York; his pieces always exude urban attitude. Lots of young designers are showing in London – Mary Katrantzou, Jonathan Saunders, Erdem and Roksanda Ilincic. These designers all know what works for them and refine their collections every season. On the other hand, with Christopher Kane you never know what to expect. His trends can be something no one else has thought of; he’s a designer who’s not to be underestimated.
My favourite aspect of Milan Fashion Week is seeing the Marni show. Marni has never followed trends and has always remained true to its signature style of bold prints and colors.
There is growing anticipation for Paris Fashion Week. Newly appointed Hedi Slimane is showcasing his first collection for Yves Saint Laurent, plus Jil Sander is back at her eponymous label for the first time in seven years so it will be interesting to see her vision for the brand’s future.
Enjoy the shows!
