First steps in fashion
I was born in fashion, my father was a tailor, ma mother a contractor for Daniel Hechter, it has always been a part of my daily life. From the age of nine, I was reading fashion magazines, I knew it would be the path I would take. A twelve, I started to customize my clothes, transform them. Younger, I would make clothes for my Barbie dolls. In short, it was a vocation.
First step in shoes
I was an bag an accessory designer but one day I started to want to design shoes. I didn't imagine then how complicated it would be so I innocently started. It's a very technical art, and very expensive. Make a heel cast, shapes, soles, it is a whole technique and a huge investment. Thankfully, I quickly found associates and a capital but I carved my first heels with a file, just imagine !
First steps in the press
Journalists already knew me since I was already working in fashion before launching my own shoe brand. The first magazine to talk about my creations under the name Karine Arabian was Dépêche Mode I think. I was delighted of course, but it was not such a big emotion as I had been used to see the press talk about my creations for a while.
First steps in success
My first big best seller was the Nero low boots, still a classic of the brand today. It doesn't go out of fashion and is so comfortable that if you adopt it, you will come bakc and buy it in different colours and materials each year. Personally, I'm getting tired of this model but people ask for it so much that I reissue it at each collection.
(My nail varnish being the same colour of the boots, I couldn't resist)
I generally only make a few mistakes, but during the pronochic times, when I launched my brand, I was said to be out dated with my round-end shoes. The trend was to very pointed shoes and my collections were despised, I was going at the opposite of what everybody was doing.
First steps with celebrities
Vanessa Paradis was the firs one to wear my shoes. She felt for them when she came to the shop with her stylist and stayed a loyal customer. She was quickly followed by Audrey Tautou and even Adjani. Everything was built on words of mouth, I was very lucky !
We entirely redecorated the shop, I wanted to change the decoration which was pretty but had been the same since the opening. It feels good to flatten everything with an atmosphere more chic, but keeping the brand codes of course and even a stronger identity.
